The evacuation of Dunkirk is one of the most famous manoeuvres in military history. It is a controversial subject that is hailed as a miracle by many people and a disaster by others.
In this essay I intend to explore both opinions and state my conclusion. Codenamed Operation Dynamo by the British, Gcse history coursework dunkirk was the large evacuation of Allied soldiers from Gcse history coursework dunkirk 26 th to June 4 thduring the Battle of Dunkirk. British Gcse history coursework dunkirk Admiral Bertram Ramsay planned the operation gcse history coursework dunkirk briefed Winston Churchill in the Dynamo Room; a room in the naval headquarters below Dover Castle, gcse history coursework dunkirk.
This room contained the dynamo that provided gcse history coursework dunkirk electricity, giving the operation its name. After the German invasion of France and the Low Countries, the Allied war plan failed when an unexpected German attack occurred through the Ardennes.
It split the Allied forces in two and with the Germans on the advance, Operation Dynamo was necessary to gcse history coursework dunkirk the retreating British Expeditionary Force BEF and Allies from the treacherous beaches of Dunkirk, gcse history coursework dunkirk. Many people believe that Operation Dynamo was a miracle mainly because of the number of troops it saved, gcse history coursework dunkirk.
II;soldiers were successfully evacuated from the beaches and returned safely back to England. A total of five nations took part in the eminent evacuation of Dunkirk - Britain, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Poland. Admiral Ramsey deployed destroyers and transport ships to evacuate the troops, but greatly underestimated the potential gcse history coursework dunkirk the manoeuvre.
Before long, the harbour became partially blocked by ships sunk from Luftwaffe German Air Force attacks. The beaches were highly dangerous and under enemy fire, gcse history coursework dunkirk. It became necessary to evacuate men from nearby beaches - something that was thought to be an almost impossible task because of shallow water.
The beaches of Dunkirk were situated on a shallow slope. Gcse history coursework dunkirk large boats were able to dock close enough to the shore where the soldiers were stranded. Around 1, of these legendary "little ships" were used.
This extract truly illustrates the extent of the astonishing fleet which was formed from an overwhelming response to the British Governments appeal. The appeal was launched on the 28 th May and by the next day hundreds of commandeered vessels owned by the public had set sail for the beaches.
Numerous boats set out for Dunkirk with just a series of courses plotted on the back of an envelope, with no gcse history coursework dunkirk what awaited them. Ordinary citizens braved the harsh channel crossing and the deadly harbour, to bring back thousands of Allied troops. In the last four days of the evacuation, the small boats returned a miraculous 26, gcse history coursework dunkirk, men to Britain. The beaches were a lethal environment, miles and miles of open ground with few sand dunes to take cover from Luftwaffe attacks.
Despite this threat the Allied troops remained calm and waited patiently in organized lines ready to be evacuated. This saying was used to describe the conduct of the men on the beaches, the participation of the little ships and the moral and camaraderie of the British public. A truly victorious attitude. Dunkirk was a military disaster, gcse history coursework dunkirk.
The loss to the British Army of soldiers and equipment was colossal. Britain was also forced to abandon almost all of her equipment. Most of it was recycled by the German Army, gcse history coursework dunkirk. Of the ships that took part in Operation Dynamo, were lost and 61 put out of action.
In all merchant seamen died during the evacuation. The evacuation and later surrender of Dunkirk led to the fall of France on June 14 th Another short coming of the BEF was the fact that they were ill-equipped to fight a superior German Army. The situation on the beaches had wider implications: moral and behaviour deteriorated.
British behaviour towards the French was also despicable considering French soldiers were holding the perimeter around Dunkirk. Lord Gort the Commander in Chief of the BEF was instructed not to inform his French colleagues that the evacuation was beginning south east of Dunkirk.
Churchill, however, soon realized that this risked damaging the last vestiges of Franco-British relations. Hence, on May 30th, he ordered that French and British troops be evacuated in equal numbers. Having researched both miracle and disaster aspects of Operation Dynamo, there is one fundamental factor that I have not explored. A world away from the treacherous beaches, a very different kind of warfare was raging in newsrooms across Britain. The propaganda machine was in full flow manufacturing the Dunkirk myth.
Under media censorship, victory was clutched from humiliating military defeat. News of events at Dunkirk were not released to the British public until 30 th May, 5 days after Operation Dynamo began. They have not come back in triumph they have come back in glory. Morale was so high that the newly appointed Prime Minister Winston Churchill was compelled to address the House of Commons.
The innovative speech he made was a landmark in British military history. Wars are not won by evacuations. In conclusion, I believe Dunkirk to be more than just a piece of military history. Dunkirk was a military defeat - but a propaganda victory. Get Full Access Now. See related essays. Gcse history coursework dunkirk many of Churchill's inspiring and patriotic speeches, his letters to General Weygand revealed the truth behind Dunkirk.
He mentions how six troop-filled ships were sunk by German bombing. Keeping in mind that a ship could hold near a troops, that is up to men killed in one bombing session. The evacuation took nine to ten days. Churchill described the soldiers as heroes but many felt ashamed of needing rescuing and failing. Others felt relieved to be alive.
The evacuation of gcse history coursework dunkirk BEF from Dunkirk in May was seen as a Miracle to many Historians. For example in source 1 David Knowles explains how 'A miracle. Women did not only contribute to the war effort, but done gcse history coursework dunkirk that was very difficult, for example, munitions factories. From F, we know that women did the work that men had done because it is a poster of a woman working in a munitions factory.
Christopher Ray wrote the article a long-time after the war, with hindsight Christopher Ray can be critical of both sides especially Germany who were unsuccessful in the Second World War. There is no real purpose gcse history coursework dunkirk the article such as to boost morale or get people to join the war.
Source 4 by Basil Collier also shows Dunkirk as a military defeat by saying that whilst many men returned from Dunkirk practically all of their equipment was left behind, 'including some tanks, more than a field guns or guns of larger calibre to say nothing of about anti aircraft guns '. This account is primary, first hand evidence so the German is speaking from personal experience producing a useful source. On the other hand the source was written by a German which would mean it is more than likely to be bias towards his nation.
This source says that it was written by a historian which increases the reliability of the text since historians know their facts.
Overall i think this source is reliable because it was written by a? Military Historian? and has the benefit of hindsight because its made for a book, although.
Also it doesn? t tell you the successes, it only shows a certain perspective; which was the Germans point of view. It doesn? t show the full picture of what actually happened, it only shows one snap of it.
The real picture was that there were casualties and that Dunkirk wasn? t a total success. Want to read the rest?
